Honda is a Japanese multinational corporation primarily known as a manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles. Honda is the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles as well as the world’s largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines measured by volume. Honda surpassed Nissan in 2001 to become the 2nd largest Japanese automobile manufacturer.
In the early 90’s, Honda Civic Si was one the most widely modified car in the US market. This era was the beginning of the explosion and growth of the Japanese Import market. A lot of enthusiasts started researching and fabricating parts for these cars resulting in brands such as DC Sports which were known mainly for the DC Sports ceramic header. AEM pioneered the cold air induction system for sport compact cars in 1994. Skunk2 Racing started developing high performance parts in 1995 and in 1997, began supplying parts to Honda Touring in the USA and participated in the Speedvision World Championship series. In 1997, the inception of Skunk2 Integra – a road race car converted into an all motor drag race car utilizing parts that were R&D by Skunk2 and it revolutionized the import drag racing. This trend still continues today with the Honda Civic Si and Honda S2000. There are much more variety and choices for performance parts, exhaust systems, coilover suspension, and engine management for the Honda Civic Si and Honda S2000.
SEMA News reported that Honda has resonated with enthusiasts as an inexpensive performance option. Many owners enjoyed the relative ease of modification with tons of choices of performance parts for the Honda Accord, Honda Civic Si, Honda Fit, Honda Prelude and Honda S2000. Enthusiasts have retained the same feelings they held in the boom years of the 90’s. In recent survey of enthusiasts that own and modify Honda vehicles, the emphasis of upgrading performance was as strong as ever.
In one of SEMA’s survey, the highest levels of agreement fell upon the following:
· 93% customizes their vehicle to increase performance
· 88% their vehicle is a way of expression
· 86% customization to make their vehicle different
· 75% primary reason for purchasing is customization
· 24% feels that their vehicle is for basic transportation
· 20% prefers to modify appearance over performance
Performance and personal expression lead the motivations for customizing vehicles.
